Anyone know what this is?

We seem to have adopted this duck thingy.. it looks like a duck but it doesn't seem to be able to fly. He started coming up out of the woods about a week ago. At first I tried to shoo him off because I was worried about my german shephard attacking it but it won't go away. The first day we fed him bread but then I read online that it was recommended not to so I got him his own box of cheerios.. lol. He seems tame and isn't afraid of us. The only time he runs is when I am throwing him food but the rest of the time he takes his sweet time waddling across the yard. I don't think he can fly because I've tried to get him to but he hasn't even attempted to. I don't know if it's injured or it just can't fly. I've been looking online but I can't find a bird that looks like this. I call him bandit because of the red stripe around his face.. lol. Anyone know? I'd love to know what kind of bird this is.

Hope you all are having a wonderful day.. I'm off to blog hop and then mow.. woohoo.

UPDATE: Thank you Donna, I think you are right that it is a Muscovy Duck. I'm guessing it's a young one since it doesn't exactly look like the ones I could find when I googled them but it does have all the right colorings. Now I'm guessing he is coming from the farm behind me. I'm really hoping he isn't gonna be a dinner one night, I found lots of recipes for cooked Muscovy duck also in my search :(

Big Hugs,

  1. Gosh I don't know but if I had my own box of cheerios I'd be a happy bird:D Do you have any wildlife rescues around anywhere where you could take him?

I'll check around today but I'm kinda getting use to him and like having him around. But I want him to do whatever it is he normally does so I'll see what I can do.

  4. We have some sorry-looking ducks in a duck pond in town and some of them look like that guy. He may have to run on water before being able to fly. Poor ol' thing, I think he's adopted you!

  6. As long as he doesn't try to attack people I can't see any harm. He is interesting though, I'd be curious to know exactly what he is.

  7. That is a Muscovy duck. They are raised for meat production. In some areas they are considered an invasive species.
